“AUGUSTO” VASE

The 1895 discovery of the Boscoreale Roman treasure, during excavations at the town of Boscoreale, near Pompeii, immediately aroused huge interest and admiration in Mario Buccellati. As such, he created a series of cups and vases inspired by the motifs of this precious Augustan treasure.

This silver vase is decorated with a so-called “ashlar” motif, which features many small, round ashlars standing tall. On the other hand, the hammered effect gives a brightness to the burnished surface of the silver.
This work, together with many other creations made during the same period, takes up the supreme example of embossing used in Roman art. This is what Mario and later Gianmaria wanted to replicate, as a means of measuring their skills against those of the Roman masters.
