Mario Buccellati opens his first jewellry boutique   
on Largo Santa Margherita in Milan

1923

Gabriele d’Annunzio, a great friend and client of Mario Buccellati,
orders the Sautoir necklace, a quintessential Art Deco design,
with rubies and yellow beryl.

1929

Gianmaria Buccellati was born in Milan. 

1951

Mario Buccellati opens his first store in New York, 
with the assistance of his son Luca. 

1954

A second store is opened in New York, on Fifth Avenue. 

1973

Gianmaria Buccellati establishes the Italian Gemological Institute (IGI),
with a group of professional colleagues.
He serves as President for the next 25 years. 

1978

 

At the age of 20, Andrea starts working in the company with his
father Gianmaria, and learns all the secrets of the ateliers. 

1979

Gianmaria Buccellati opens his flagship store in Paris, on place
Vendome, confirming his status as one of the most prestigious
jewelers in the world. 

1995

The exhibition ‘ The Art of Buccellati ’ opens at the San Francisco
Academy of Sciences and travels to
the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto in 1996. 

2000

The museum exhibition ‘ Buccellati: Art in Gold, Silver and Gems ’
opens at the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural
History in Washington, D.C., featuring a retrospective 
Mario and Gianmaria Buccellati’s work.

 


At the same time, ‘ Viaggio in Italia ’ (Trip to Italy), composed by the
Italian composer and cellist Giovanni Sollima, makes its debut at
Carnegie Hall in New York: the opera is commissioned by and
dedicated to Gianmaria Buccellati. 

 

2001

Gianmaria Buccellati launches his first watch collection in Geneva during
the SIHH exhibition International Fine Watchingmaking fair.  

2004

Buccellati organizes the world preview of the Animalier collection,
a family of 28 animal brooches created around extraordinary baroque pearls. 
The shop opens in Milan and later travels to Paris and New York.

2006

The exhibition ‘ A Silver Menagerie ’ opens at The Huntsville Museum of Art
at Huntsville (Alabama), displaying a collection of animals made using the
iconic ‘ fur and feathers ’ techniques. 

2008

The exhibition ‘ Buccellati, Timeless Art ’ is inaugurated at The State Museum
of Moscow Kremlin. It is the first ever exhibition dedicated to a
living jeweler.

Gianmaria Buccellati creates the ‘ Gianmaria Buccellati Foundation ’,
where he bestows his private collection of ornamental cups and jewels, some
of his father ’s creations and drawings made by himself and his father. 

2010

Inspired by the color of large and usual stones, Gianmaria Buccellati
designs a whole collection of Cocktail Rings. The collection
travels around the world for one entire year, much to the
excitement of Buccellati's admirers. 

2013

In 2013, the private equity fund Clessidra SGR became the lead investing partner
in the Buccellati brand. The Buccellati family continues to oversee the creative
direction of the collection and its artisans. Andrea Buccellati is Creative Director and President,
Gino oversees Buccellati's silver business, Maria Cristina Buccellati heads
Buccellati's Global Communications, and Luca deals with Top Client Relationships.
